The biggest change to television in Sheffield and Chesterfield for a generation began today, as the first analogue signals were turned off and digital TV boosted to reach all areas.

The start of TV switchover means thousands of viewers in digital blackspots such as Totley, Dronfield and Hasland can get BBC Freeview channels for the first time, while picture quality will improve for many existing viewers.

Homes already watching Freeview will need to retune their TVs and boxes in order to regain BBC services, which will be missing this morning.

Switchover began in the early hours when analogue BBC Two was permanently turned off at the Sheffield and Chesterfield transmitter groups, which serve 153,000 homes. The process will be completed on 24 August, when the remaining analogue channels will be switched off. Further Freeview channels from ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 will then be available from local transmitters for the first time.

The Switchover Help Scheme is still welcoming applications from eligible older and disabled people to get help to convert one television, including a choice of equipment, installation and aftercare. For those who have already signed up, the Help Scheme call centre is available to help with any problems and can be contacted on 0800 40 85 900.

John Askew, Digital UK Regional Manager for Yorkshire, said this morning:

“This is great news for Sheffield and Chesterfield, as many people are receiving new channels for the first time. Those viewers who haven’t switched to digital should prepare for 24 August, when the last analogue channels will be permanently switched off. Our advice is: get ready now – don’t leave it until the last minute.”

All analogue TV channels in Herefordshire, south Shropshire and parts of Gloucestershire were switched off for good today, signalling the dawn of an all-digital era for more than 280,000 households.

Shortly after midnight, analogue BBC One, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5 were turned off permanently at the Ridge Hill transmitter group, enabling extra channels to be broadcast from 19 local relay transmitters serving 15,000 homes.
The changes also affect existing Freeview viewers who may find some of their channels missing this morning.

The services have moved to new frequencies and can be restored by retuning Freeview TVs and boxes.1 Viewers in some areas may also find their digital TVs or boxes load more than one regional service. Advice on prioritising the preferred regional service is available from Digital UK.

Digital UK, which has co-ordinated the switch, and the Switchover Help Scheme are today running advice points and a roadshow to provide support for viewers who need it. The Help Scheme is still open to applications from older and disabled viewers who may qualify for help including a choice of equipment, installation and aftercare.

Sumera Bashir, Digital UK’s Assistant Regional Manager for Central, said:

“This is an historic day for TV in Herefordshire, south Shropshire and parts of Gloucestershire as we say goodbye to the old analogue system forever. Viewers have responded extremely well and many are enjoying the benefits of digital TV for the first time.“As with any change on this scale, some people may need a bit of extra help so we and the Help Scheme are on hand to give advice and assistance to those who may need it.”

Unprepared viewers face blank screens when analogue is switched off.

Analogue TV viewers in Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire have just two weeks to get ready for the digital TV switchover, starting on 30 March.
With just a fortnight to go until the first analogue channel is permanently switched off, latest research indicates nine out of ten homes in Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire have already gone digital on their main TV set, but some still need to get ready or risk having a blank screen.

Digital UK, the independent body in charge of the process, is now launching the final stage of its information campaign. Large warning messages will be broadcast on analogue channels, reminding viewers to get ready for switchover. The Switchover Help Scheme is also urging any eligible older and disabled viewers yet to respond to let them know whether they want practical support to convert one TV set to digital, including a choice of equipment, installation and aftercare.

The switchover will take place in two stages and will see Freeview coverage boosted to reach thousands of viewers who get their signal from local relay transmitters. At both stages, new and existing viewers with Freeview, BT Vision and Top Up TV will need to retune their TVs or digital boxes to pick up all the services available. After retuning, viewers in some areas may find they have more than one regional service available.

The Digital UK website and advice line offer advice on retuning and selecting the correct regional service.

Stage one starts in the early hours of Wednesday 30 March. Analogue BBC Two will be permanently switched off from the Sandy Heath transmitter and its relays. Some Freeview digital channels, including BBC Two, become available for the first time to viewers served by relay transmitters.

Stage two starts in the early hours of Wednesday 13 April. The remaining analogue channels (BBC One, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5) will be permanently switched off. These services and a range of other Freeview TV, radio and text services become available to viewers served by relay transmitters.

Peter Monteith, Digital UK?s Regional Manager in Anglia, said:

“Most viewers are ready for switchover and many are looking forward to getting digital TV for the first time. While the process will be straightforward for most people, inevitably some viewers may need a bit of extra help so we are working with the Switchover Help Scheme and local charities to offer support for those who need it throughout the switchover period.”

ITV1+1 will go live on Freeview in England & Wales on Tuesday 11th January 2011. The launch of STV+1 in Scotland and UTV1+1 in Northern Ireland is still to be confirmed. To receive this channel you may need to re-tune your Freeview TV or box after 2pm on 11 January 2011.

There is no news on on a ITV1+1 HD channel, but this is a useful addition nonetheless.

Retuning advice is available at www.tvretune.co.uk or by calling ITV on 0844 881 4150.

To make way for the new ITV1+1 channel, ITV2+1 is being moved to a new multiplex on Freeview and will change from a 24 hour channel to a part-time channel, broadcast between 19:00-04:00 daily.

This means that in England, Wales and the Channel Islands, ITV2+1 will disappear from channel number 33 and ITV1+1 will appear. Re-tuning will return ITV2+1 at channel number 27 and update the description on channel number 33 to read ‘ITV1+1’.

In Scotland and Northern Ireland, ITV2+1 will disappear, and a retune is needed both to retrieve ITV2+1 at the same channel number (27) as well as load the new STV+1 or UTV+1 service at channel number 33.

If you receive your Freeview service from a relay transmitter and live in a region which has completed digital switchover, ITV1+1 will replace your current ITV2+1 channel.

At the same time, changes are also being made to the Freeview service in the West TV region.

Freeview viewers tuned to the Mendip transmitter near Bath, serving parts of Bristol, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, will need to re-tune their equipment anytime after 2pm on 11 January 2011 when an important change to local signals is carried out.

All Freeview, BT Vision and Top Up TV boxes, as well as digital TVs, should be re-tuned at any point after this.

Mendip serves an estimated 720,000 households and anyone watching Freeview direct from this transmitter will need to re-tune in order to regain access to certain channels including ITV4, Film4 and Yesterday. Those watching just satellite or cable are not affected.

The change is being carried out to allow BT Vision customers the opportunity to subscribe to Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 in the Mendip transmission area and is timed to coincide with the new ITV1+1 channel being launched nationally, which also requires a re-tune. As the West region has already switched to digital, relay stations of Mendip will also benefit from the new ITV1+1 service provided they re-scan their receivers.

Anyone needing assistance with re-tuning should visit the TV Re-tune website or contact the ITV viewer advice line.
